The Most Gorgeous Celeb Wedding Inspiration from the ’60s & ’70s

As you may have already figured out, we love celebrity weddings here at One Fab Day, but, if we’re honest, the celebrity weddings we reference are often ones that took place 40+ years ago! The 1960s and 1970s were truly a golden era for celebrity weddings, one that’s inspired brides in every decade since, so we thought it was about time we collected photographs from all of those gorgeous celebrations in one place! Weddings in the 1960s and 1970s were, by and large, more casual affairs (yes, even when the people getting married were movie stars or rock stars!), so the style inspiration from this era is just perfect for your civil ceremony or part-one wedding moodboard! Without further ado, here are our very favourite celebrity wedding dresses from the 1960s and 1970s. Enjoy!

Our Favourite Celebrity Wedding Dresses from the 1960s and 1970s:

1. Priscilla Presley, 1967

Celebrity weddings don’t get much more iconic than this! Elvis and Priscilla Presley chose the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas as the location for their intimate ceremony and lavish reception, which included a five-foot wedding cake! But it’s Priscilla’s wedding-day look that made this wedding’s longest-lasting cultural impact. 55 years later, brides are still drawing inspiration from her simple, pearl-embellished gown, bouffant hairstyle, delightfully retro short, tulle veil and elaborate, liner-heavy eye makeup.

2. Elizabeth Taylor, 1964

Elizabeth Taylor was famously married eight times, so choosing a favourite of her bridal looks isn’t easy, but this deliciously retro look is hard to beat! To marry actor Richard Burton (who she divorced in 1974, before marrying again in 1975, and divorcing again in 1976!), she wore a canary yellow, chiffon, babydoll-style dress with an emerald and diamond brooch, and wore her hair in a dramatic braid, adorned with a drop-dead gorgeous ascending flower crown of hyacinth and lily of the valley.

3. Syreeta Wright, 1970

For her 1970 wedding to Stevie Wonder, singer-songwriter Syreeta Wright wore a simple, A-line ivory gown with a round neckline and statement, flared sleeves. It was an incredibly elegant and timeless choice, that Syreeta styled up with a corsage of fresh lillies, and by wearing her hair in two chic side buns (seven years before Princess Leia made the look famous in Star Wars!).

4. Bianca Jagger, 1971

We can’t talk about our favourite wedding dresses of the 1960s and 1970s without mentioning Bianca Jagger, who made it official with Mick Jagger at Saint Tropez Town Hall in 1971 in a tailored, two-piece skirt suit by Yves Saint Laurent. Putting her signature stamp on YSL’s iconic Le Smoking jacket by wearing it without a blouse underneath, she added a wide-brimmed, veiled sun hat and ankle-strap, peep toe heels that wouldn’t look out of place on department store shelves today. If you’re dreaming of a boldly stylish bridal look, either for a civil ceremony or lavish party, this look really delivers 1970s glamour!

5. Mia Farrow, 1966

Mia Farrow delivered cutting-edge fashion at her wedding to Frank Sinatra, which took place at the Las Vegas home of one of Sinatra’s friends. Between her edgy pixie cut and her mod, knee-length, ivory skirt suit, featuring a double-breasted jacket and bow at the waistline, she looked the picture of 1960s style, but her subtly chic outfit would look just as gorgeous on a modern-day bride. She changed into a sheer lace overlay dress for the reception, but it’s her ceremony style that’s still inspiring us in 2021.

6. Audrey Hepburn, 1969

No list of the best celebrity wedding dresses of the 1960s would be complete without this beauty! Audrey Hepburn wore some seriously stunning wedding dresses on the big screen, but for both of her real-life weddings, kept it chic and simple. In 1969, to wed Andrea Dotti, she wore a pale pink, funnel-necked minidress by her longtime friend and collaborator Hubert de Givenchy, and a matching head scarf-style headpiece. Paired with simple, white ballet flats, it makes for the simplest and sweetest bridal look on our list.

7. Yoko Ono, 1969

Yoko Ono and John Lennon used their wedding as an excuse to garner publicity for their famous bed-in for peace protest, which they staged during their honeymoon, so the wedding itself often gets forgotten about! A low-key affair in Gibraltar, it found Yoko wearing a white, two-piece outfit, including a layered miniskirt, which she paired with a wide-brimmed hat, plimsoll shoes and knee-length socks, perfectly matching the relaxed look of John’s polo neck and cord combo. Brides who fancy recreating the look for a laid-back wedding or civil ceremony could swap the plimsolls for knee-length boots, which would also bring some 1960s flavour.

8. Farrah Fawcett, 1973

Bold, romantic, and quintessentially ’70s, Farrah Fawcett’s bridal look from her 1973 wedding to actor Lee Majors is definitely one for fans of retro style. Featuring a long, flowy gown with cinched waist and cuffs but dramatic, voluminous sleeves, her dress was a relaxed showstopper. She paired it with sandals and a floppy sun hat adorned with with fabric bows.

9. Candice Bergen, 1968

We’re cheating a little with this inclusion, as Candice Bergen’s bridal look above is actually taken from the 1970 film The Adventurers, but we just couldn’t resist! Featuring a high neckline, long sleeves and elaborate floral embellishment on the bodice and skirt, it’s worthy of a feature of its own! It fuses Grace Kelly levels of glamour with late ’60s luxury, and we think it could easily own the stage at a present-day bridal runway show.

10. Maureen Cox, 1965

Although marrying Ringo Star, one of the most famous men in the world, hairdresser Maureen Cox kept it simple with her wedding-day look, choosing a pleated skirt suit with pillbox hat, adorned with a cute bow. Her less-is-more look provides gorgeous inspiration for brides looking for a chic, unfussy look for a civil ceremony or elopement.

11. Alana Stewart, 1979

An off-shouldered, tiered-skirt gown with lace appliqué represented the height of fashion in 1979, making it the perfect choice for Alana and Rod Stewart’s big day. We love Alana’s baby breath flower crown, and her lace gloves gave fashion-spotters a little preview of what ’80s bridal style had in store!

9. Ginger Rogers, 1961

For her fifth marriage to bandleader William Marshall, movie star Ginger Rogers kept her look low key, but fans of vintage style will be taken with her bridal look nonetheless. Wearing a painfully chic skirt suit with wide lapel and oversized buttons, she’s the picture of late 1950s/early 1960s glam. She paired her suit with a veiled pillbox hat, short gloves, classic heels and a simple string of pearls.
