The family of tragic cinematographer Halyna Hutchins joined hundreds of mourners at a candlelit vigil and memorial this weekend.

Two events were held in the 42-year-old’s honour, after she was killed with a prop gun while filming Alec Baldwin western drama, Rust, in New Mexico.

The accident saw Alec shoot the gun while on set, not realising it contained live rounds. Joel Souza, the director, was also injured in the incident.

In court documents, IATSE Local 44, a labor union for professionals in the entertainment industry, stated the gun contained a single live bullet.

At a private memorial, Halyna’s husband Matthew Hutchins and their son Andros, nine, were joined by cast and crew of the film, with actor Alec also present.

“Our loss is enormous, and we ask that the media please respect my family’s privacy as we process our grief. We thank everyone for sharing images and stories of her life.”

It appears that after two days in New Mexico, Matthew and Andros checked out of their hotel to head home.

The incident has calls for better gun safety on set and the removal of working gun from all films.

This was further cemented by the candlelit vigil held by the International Cinematographers Guild at Albuquerque Civic Plaza this weekend.

During the service, Halyna’s co-workers and friends shared memories of their time with her, with moments of silence to commemorate her unnecessary death doing the job that she loved.

Devastated friends and filmmakers were devastated by the tragedy

In a report by Daily Mail , a woman told the congregation: “Tonight is about Halyna. There will be plenty of time to focus on the who, on the what, on the why in the future,’ said a woman during the vigil.

“But we have two things to accomplish tonight. The first is to comfort each other and the second is to celebrate the remarkable life of a remarkable woman that was cut short way too soon.”

Homemade signs at the vigil declared that Halyna “deserved a safe workplace”.

A petition launched by friend Bandar Albuliwi has already gained 10,000 signatures, in this hope that “this avoidable tragedy never happens again”.

“There is no excuse for something like this to happen in the 21st century. Real guns are no longer needed on film production sets,” he wrote in his argument.

According to sources, there had been walkouts by crewmembers after several other incidents involving gun safety on the set. Halyna was reportedly among those who expressed her concerns.

During the incident, Alec – who plays an outlaw whose grandson is sentenced to death for an accidental killing – was handed the gun and informed it was “cold”, meaning safe for use.

In the scene, he was instructed to aim the gun directly at the camera and shoot.

When he pulled the trigger, the live round still in the chamber killed Halyna, who was filming him, as well as Joel Souza who was directly behind her.

Joel, who was hit in the shoulder by the bullet, has now been discharged from hospital.

In a statement, filmmaker Joel said : “I am gutted by the loss of my friend and colleague, Halyna. She was kind, vibrant, incredibly talented, fought for every inch and always pushed me to be better.

“My thoughts are with her family at this most difficult time. I am humbled and grateful by the outpouring of affection we have received from our filmmaking community, the people of Santa Fe, and the hundreds of strangers who have reached out… It will surely aid in my recovery.”
