Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s position as Manchester United manager is safe for this season, says Gary Neville.
Amid a tricky spell either side of the latest international break, United returned to winning ways in midweek, but they were unable to follow up on the pulsating comeback against Atalanta and United were destroyed by Mohamed Salah and rampant Premier League contenders Liverpool.
Salah took centre stage with a hat-trick at Old Trafford after goals from Naby Keita and Diogo Jota.
Paul Pogba also saw red in the 5-0 humiliation, although that came when the game was already up.
The big talking point in the studio post-match was, meanwhile, the future of Solskjaer. He replaced Jose Mourinho – initially on a temporary basis – in December 2018.
But when might officials at Old Trafford make another change in the dugout?
Neville said: “They’re not close to winning the league, or Champions League, and they’re nowhere near the other three teams at the moment. It was painful watching that interview, to field questions like that.
“But it’s part of the game. You’re at Man United. It’s a big boy game and a big boy club.
“If you lose to Liverpool 5-0 at home then you’re going to come under big pressure. If this was in the post-Sir Alex aftermath, Ole would be in massive trouble tonight.
“I think the club will hold their nerve and I don’t think they’ve planned for another manager this season.
“They’ll sit with Ole until the end of the season. There will be a massive outcry from fans and media from everybody that he should be sacked and I can understand why after that game. It takes some recovery. I’d like to hear from the board to communicate with the fans to say if they are going to back the manager over the next six months.

“The media have asked questions and the feeling is they believe in the project.
“Ole believes he’s close, I remain to be convinced. Man United aren’t good. This team finished second and added a great player, everyone was buzzing five weeks ago. The reality is something has to change.”
