Jurgen Klopp: Two key decisions went against Liverpool in West Ham defeat

Liverpool suffered a rare blip as they fell to their first loss in the Premier League this season over the weekend.

West Ham claimed an impressive 3-2 victory to end the Reds’ unbeaten start to the season as they moved above their opponents into third and denied Jurgen Klopp’s side a piece of club history as they looked to extend their run to 26 matches without defeat.

Following the shock defeat, questions are now being asked about the Reds’ performance with their defence understandably coming under fire.

The team’s tactical set-up and individual performances have since been criticised, although Jurgen Klopp can be reassured about one of his predictions which has now come true.

Here’s a round-up of all the latest Liverpool headlines.

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk has been issued a warning by Rio Ferdinand

Tactics criticised

Jamie Carragher remains baffled by Liverpool’s insistence on playing their high defensive line.

The Reds back four, marshalled by Virgil van Dijk, were caught out by West Ham on a number of occasions during their 3-2 defeat in the capital.

It can be a high-risk strategy, but Jurgen Klopp has seen his side keep a host of clean sheets during his tenure while playing with that defensive system.

But Carragher, himself a former defender, has questioned what Liverpool gain from continuing to play as they do.

After spending the first few years of his career with Groningen, Celtic and Southampton, the 30-year-old reached the Champions League final in his first Liverpool season and won the competition in his second.

But his form has stuttered this season – leading to criticism from Ferdinand.

Klopp prediction rings true

Rhian Brewster finally has his maiden league goal for Sheffield United – at the 35th time of asking.

Shortly after sanctioning Brewster’s move to United, Liverpool chief Jurgen Klopp spoke of his respect for the youngster and also about how goalscoring is in his DNA.

That prediction, after more than a year of having to be patient, might now finally be starting to ring true.

Klopp said: “It would not be possible for me to understate my love, respect and admiration for Rhi.

“Such a special guy on and off the pitch. I’m not going to lie, agreeing to that transfer was really hard.

“He is a natural-born goalscorer. It’s in his DNA. He is a coach’s dream as he is so eager to learn but also a beacon of positive energy.”
