Owen Hargreaves praises ‘only player to show belief’ in Watford loss

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has praised Donny van de Beek after their loss to Watford this afternoon.

United were soundly beaten 4-1 – now losing five of their last seven games.

United were kept in the game on occasions by goalkeeper David de Gea who saved two penalties to keep Ismaila Sarr out, but Watford were comfortably ahead by half-time – deserving of their two-goal lead.

Van de Beek would bring United back into contention in the second half as he scored on the 50th minute.

However, United captain Harry Maguire was sent off for a second bookable offence with 20 minutes remaining and a pair of goals from Joao Pedro and Dennis put the Hornets out of sight deep into stoppage time.

Van de Beek though, would perform admirably throughout the game, with Hargreaves stating that he’s the one player who can be pleased with his performance.

He said: “They (United) don’t look like they believed, the energy wasn’t there, the effort wasn’t there.

“The only player that showed that really was Donny van de Beek when he came off the bench.

“He played great. He played absolutely fabulous.

“But you get the red card for Harry Maguire, De Gea’s been their best player this season and he conceded a couple of soft goals… there’s not just one thing.”

United have now fallen to seventh place in the table, with pressure mounting last night on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
