Urban Dictionary name meaning: How to find yours and why people are posting on Instagram

If you’ve spotted people sharing Instagram and Twitter screenshots of their Urban Dictionary name, you might be wondering what the fuss was about? Here’s what the trend means and how you can find your Urban Dictionary name

Urban Dictionary is an online dictionary for all the latest slang

Urban Dictionary is an alternative dictionary for trendy slang terms and phrases which can be real terms used in life. They may be silly abbreviations, or even offensive at times.

Though the platform has been around since the late 90s, it has gained a surge in popularity because of a recent trend.

Many people have taken to searching their names on the platform and sharing what their names mean across Instagram and Twitter.

One of the main reasons this trend has caught on might be because the results are almost always complimentary, no matter what your name is.

Here’s what you need to know about the new meme, including how to find out your own Urban Dictionary name.

What is the Urban Dictionary name meme?

People have been sharing screenshots of their Urban Dictionary name definition on Instagram and Twitter, with a sticker or caption that reads: “Show your name in Urban Dictionary, here’s mine”.

The Urban Dictionary name meme has people searching their names on the platform and almost always getting back complimentary results

But most of the posts have been people poking fun at the trend, because Urban Dictionary definitions can be posted by users.

This means that many of the complimentary name meanings may actually be people writing nice things about their partners, friends, family and even themselves.

For example, the first entry when you search the name Tom on the platform reads: “An aristocrat of the soul, as blue-blooded as they come. A brave and strong Viking warrior-philosopher. Truly noble, gallant and chivalrous. A person of great depth – of mind, soul and heart. Strongest personality you’ll come across, nothing can break his indomitable spirit.”

The trend isn’t new and isn’t meant to be taken seriously since meanings are often written by users themselves

Or when you search Jane and get: “Although a small innocent creature, Jane is a fun packed little bundle of fun! She is the sweetest thing you will ever find and she is definitely one of a kind,” as the first result.

It might have become popular only now, but this isn’t a new trend and nor is it meant to be taken seriously. In fact, the first Urban Dictionary definition for the word “name”, posted back in 2014, makes this clear.

It reads: “An area of definitions on Urban Dictionary with absolutely no purpose except to get on people’s nerves by unjustifiably talking about how awesome someone with a certain name is. The existence of names as definitions on this website is nothing but an obnoxious joke.”
