    18. That’s the best chance of the game so far.

Robertson has been having some early joy down the left hand side already this afternoon.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    17. GOOD SAVE!

Neat play on the right hand side between Salah and Henderson frees up some space for Alexander-Arnold to swing a cross in.

It’s all the way through to Robertson at the back post, who tries to head it across goal back where it came from.

The ball takes a deflection though, wrong footing Martinez and heading towards the front post.

Martinez adjusts brilliantly though, diving down to his right to claw the ball away and to safety.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    16. Mane goes down under a challenge from Luiz, but the ball runs to Henderson who plays in Salah.

The whistle goes though, Mane had come back from an offside position before being clattered by Luiz.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    15. Luiz goes for goal at the front post, looking to catch out Alisson.

It’s not a bad idea, but the execution isn’t there as Luiz can only scuff his effort into the side netting.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    14. Targett aims a ball towards Watkins on the left, and he gets to it ahead of Van Dijk.

Watkins then does brilliantly to spin past Van Dijk, forcing the Liverpool man to haul him down.

It’s a free-kick to Villa and a yellow card for the Dutchman, and this is now a chance for the visitors.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    12. The Reds can’t make anything of the corner which is aimed towards Matip again.

Liverpool are just starting to get on top here.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    11. Liverpool corner.

    There’s a half chance!

Robertson cuts the ball across to the edge of the box from the left hand side towards Salah.

Salah dummies to shoot, leaving it to run for Alexander-Arnold.

The right-back strikes it firmly first time, but is denied by a flying block from Matt Targett.

Great work from the Villa man.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    10. Ten minutes gone at Anfield.

No chances to report for either side as of yet.

That penalty appeal is the only moment of excitement we’ve had so far.

That will suit Villa down to the ground though, if they can quiet this crowd and keep it 0-0 for as long as they can they will fancy their chances.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    9. VAR had a quick look at that one but decided not to intervene.

Cash does have an arm across the body of Mane.

It would have been soft, but you can see why referee Atwell could have been tempted to give a spot kick.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    9. PENALTY APPEAL!

Mane plays the ball into Salah on the box, who returns it back to him first time.

The forward bursts into the box, and goes down under a challenge from Cash.

Stuart Atwell shakes his head, with Mane looking at him in disbelief.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    8. Alexander-Arnold whips the corner in towards Matip.

It’s close to finding him, but Konsa again does just enough to force Matip to mis his header.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    7. Liverpool corner, their first of the game.

Henderson crosses in from the right towards Mane, but Konsa gets his head to it first and turns it behind for a corner.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    6. It does look like Oxlade-Chamberlain is playing through the middle this afternoon.

He’s the one taking up the highest position for the Reds and pressing, forcing Martinez to go long.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    5. Villa elect not to put the free kick into the box, instead playing short.

It amounts to nothing though as Robertson presses and forces a throw-in to the Reds.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    4. Now Villa break through Ramsey down the left.

Fabinho has two bites at the cherry, eventually bringing him down with a sliding challenge midway inside the Liverpool half.

He can count himself lucky not to be booked there.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    3. It’s a good start by the Reds.

Mane breezes past Cash on the left hand side and gets down to the byline.

He stands up a cross with his left foot towards the back post but Mings heads away.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    2. It’s a crackling atmosphere at Anfield as Martinez goes long towards Watkins.

Van Dijk gets in front of the Villa man and the Reds get on the ball for the first time in the game.

  • LIVERPOOL 0-0 ASTON VILLA

    1. Aston Villa have the early possession, but they’re immediately hounded by Liverpool players.

Martinez nearly gives it away on his own goal-line, but just manages to smuggle the ball clear.

  • KICK OFF!

    WE’RE UNDERWAY AT ANFIELD!

  • RESPECTS PAID

Anfield is paying tribute today to Ray Kennedy.

The Liverpool and Arsenal legend sadly passed away at age 70 at the end of November.

Applause echoes around Anfield, with a special No5 mosaic held up by the Kop.

  • HERE THEY COME

Aston Villa are out onto the pitch first to a chorus of boos at Anfield.

The boos turn to cheers as Steven Gerrard emerges from the tunnel.

He quickly acknowledges the crowd with a round of applause before taking up his position in the dugout.

Very understated from the Aston Villa boss, just as he would have wanted it to be.

  • MAGIC MO

You wouldn’t bet against Mo Salah scoring his 14th Premier League goal of the season today, would you?

He currently leads the race for the golden boot by four goals, ahead of Jamie Vardy on nine and Liverpool team-mate Diogo Jota on eight.

Here’s what Steven Gerrard has to say before kick off: “It always feels good walking through these doors.

“Many memories here, but real, obviously professional job that needs to be done from my point of view.

“Try and prepare the team in the best way we can, and we come here ready for a battle.”

  • KLOPP SPEAKS

Jurgen Klopp has been singing the praises of Steven Gerrard ahead of kick off.

Speaking to beIN Sports, Klopp said: “He’s one of the best footballers ever, we know that.

“But now we face him as a manager.

“Thanks god he’s not playing, that’s the best news, let me say it like this.”

  • LEADING THE LINE

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain leads the line for Liverpool this afternoon.

Were he to play the full 90 minutes, it would be the first time he completes a full Premier League game in three-and-a-half years.
