Aileen picks up top award

Wombling in Winchburgh has won an inspiring litter picker a coveted accolade from a national charity.

Environmental charity, Keep Scotland Beautiful, has presented Winchburgh resident, Aileen Murdoch, with a Clean Up Scotland Hero award for her tireless weekly efforts to litter pick come rain or shine.

Aileen litter picked locally for years before working with the Winchburgh Community Growing Group to launch the Winchburgh Wombles – inspired by the cuddly anti-litter characters from the acclaimed BBC TV series.

In June 2020, she racked up the most hours and bags as part of the group’s total of 169 hours and 9090 bags. Aileen also delivers all the PPE and stock to new Wombles and helps guide them on board. Nothing is ever too much trouble to Aileen, who is truly a unique community hero and inspiration.

Penny Lochhead, Winchburgh Developments Community, Greenspace and Sports manager, said: “We are thrilled Aileen has this much deserved recognition, she is the power and inspiration to so many in the Womble network in the village and we are delighted to support her and the other amazing volunteers as they continually undertake amazing work throughout the community.”

Heather McLaughlin, campaigns officer at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “People such as Aileen, who give their time to cleaning up their local areas, are true heroes. Over the past decade we have seen a steady increase in the amount of litter across Scotland.

“However, despite the challenges we have all faced over the last 18 months we have been heartened by the increasing number of people like Aileen taking action to tackle litter across our beautiful country.”

Aileen received her Clean Up kit at a ceremony where the Winchburgh Community Growing Group were planting 1000 trees in the community woodland on Saturday. The kit of goodies, to help with future litter picks, has been provided courtesy of Helping Hand Environmental.
