Manchester United’s Christmas record is music to Ralf Rangnick’s ears

Manchester United’s busy festive period is finally set to get underway after a couple of false starts.

The traditionally hectic fixture schedule can often make or break a season as clubs navigate games every few days, but this year United are one of a number of teams to have suffered Covid outbreaks.

For United and new interim boss Ralf Rangnick, their wait for a competitive match will have hit 16 days by the time they travel to face Newcastle on December 27 after games against Brentford and Brighton were postponed.

Still, despite the less-than-ideal preparation, the omens are good for those at Old Trafford.

In 85 fixtures between Boxing Day and January 4, the Reds have the best points-per-match record in Premier League history.

They have won 55 of those games and earned 186 points at an average of 2.19 per match.

Twenty points ahead of Arsenal and 25 of Liverpool.

They have three opportunities to keep their formidable run going as they face a trip to St James’ Park before back-to-back home matches against Burnley and Wolves.

In their previous four wins against the Magpies, they have scored 15 with Cristiano Ronaldo looking to extend his run at their expense. The last time he was in front of the Gallowgate End he scored twice and registered an assist in a 5-1 drubbing.
