Liverpool FC legend was the only player that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted at Manchester United

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was the only rival player that Sir Alex Ferguson would have wanted to play for Manchester United.

Ferguson spent 26 years at Old Trafford and he built multiple world-class squads throughout that trophy-laden tenure.

The legendary manager rarely failed to land his transfer targets – Paul Gascoigne and Alan Shearer were among the few players that turned Ferguson down – such was the standing of the club and excellent recruitment underpinned the Reds’ every success.

But there was actually one player that played for United’s rivals, Liverpool, that Ferguson wanted to sign.

Danny Murphy played for Liverpool for seven years and he played alongside Gerrard during that period. With Ferguson’s 80th birthday now just around the corner, Murphy has recalled an encounter with Ferguson in which he revealed his admiration for Gerrard.

“As a player, I only saw competitive Fergie, complaining about our tactics when we beat them,” Murphy wrote.

“But I saw the human side many years later when I bumped into him waiting for a cab in London. ‘Oy, you!’ was his playful introduction before telling me that Steven Gerrard was the one player he would have wanted to play for Man Utd.

“I did reply that was never f***ing going to happen! It was nice to have a chat and some banter with him away from the pitch.”
