Eoin Doyle’s Bolton Wanderers exit confirmed as striker leaves to join St Patrick’s Athletic

Eoin Doyle’s time at Bolton Wanderers has come to an end after it has been confirmed that the strike has left the club to join St Patrick’s Athletic in his native Ireland.

The 33-year-old forward has been Wanderers’ vice-captain and scored 19 goals for the University of Bolton Stadium club as Ian Evatt’s side won promotion out of League Two.

Doyle has been a regular once again for Wanderers this season in League One and has found the back of the net eight times in all competitions so far, though only five of these have been in the division.

Reports had circulated in recent days suggesting that Doyle was set to end his time as a Bolton player and sign for St Pat’s, despite still having 18 months left to run on a three-year-deal he signed when he joined the club in the summer of 2020.

But he has joined the Dublin side on a three-year deal and is poised to play again in the Republic of Ireland for the first time since 2011 and ends a decade of playing football in the UK.

Doyle leaves the University of Bolton Stadium club with 27 goals in 72 appearances in all competitions, with his last game for the team being the 1-0 loss to Hartlepool United earlier this month in the Papa John’s Trophy.

The striker has previously spoken of his desire to play again in Ireland before hanging up his boots and retiring, and has now completed a move back to his homeland.

“Eoin was a fantastic signing for us who played a vital role in last season’s success,” said Wanderers’ boss Evatt.

“He has continued to be an important player this season but this is an outstanding opportunity for him and we didn’t want to stand in his way.

“He can now prolong his career back in Ireland and, just as importantly for him, take his family back home.

“It also allows us to continue to evolve and keep pushing forward with our squad to make us stronger this season and beyond.

“We have already signed a proven goalscorer in Dion Charles and are looking to strengthen further during the January transfer window.”
