Conor McGregor: Who will he fight next?

Leon Edwards has slammed Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal as “bums” after their grudge fight was announced for March.

Edwards, who is widely considered the next contender to Kamaru Usman’s welterweight title, was set to fight Masvidal last month in Las Vegas.

But the two-time world title challenger was forced out with an injury, and has instead now opted to take on his teammate-turned-rival in a bitter grudge match, much to Edwards’ chagrin.

Masvidal and Covington will fight at UFC 272 in Las Vegas on March 5 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The Brit is now without a fight, with the promotion seemingly not keen to confirm that he will be fighting for the title despite a ten-fight unbeaten run since he last fought Usman in 2015.

And Edwards has mocked Masvidal and Covington, commenting under a tweet reporting that the fight was confirmed that they are “two bums coming off losses”.

Covington is one of the top welterweights in the world, and was interim champion back in 2018, but has lost two of his last three fights, both against Usman.

He was stopped with seconds to go in the fifth and final round of their first meeting at UFC 245 in December, and after beating Tyron Woodley in September 2020, was given another shot at the champion in November.

But he was unable to get on the right side of a tight decision when they rematched at Madison Square Garden in the main event of UFC 268.

Masvidal, on the other hand, has lost four on his last seven, taking back-to-back losses to Usman in July 2020 and April 2021 after a three-fight win streak in 2019.

He viciously knocked out Darren Till at The O2 Arena in London in March 2019 before rocketing to fame with a six-second knockout of then-undefeated Ben Askren at UFC 239.

The UFC then developed a brand new unique BMF belt for he and Nate Diaz to fight over at UFC 244 in New York that November, which he won after three rounds when a doctor deemed it unsafe for Diaz to continue.

He was out of action for eight months following the Diaz fight as he attempted to negotiate a new deal, which was hastily agreed when he took a short-notice title fight against Usman to save the UFC 251 card in Abu Dhabi.

Masvidal flew out on under a weeks’ notice, but was handily beaten by the superior grappler in Usman, who agreed to offer him a rematch with a full camp as a ‘thank you’ for taking the short notice bout.

And Usman made sure the judges weren’t needed when they met again the following April at UFC 261 in the promotion’s first event with a full-capacity crowd back since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in Florida.

He knocked out Masvidal with a brutal right in the second round to cement his position as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
