Mikel Arteta discusses the team spirit at Arsenal after Liverpool draw

This week has been underscored in the diaries of Arsenal supporters for a while as a huge one for the club.

The Gunners have three key games to negotiate, with two legs of the League Cup semi-final against Liverpool sandwiching a north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Having survived the first part of that triumvirate well with a 0-0 draw against the Reds at Anfield – despite the best efforts of the red-carded Granit Xhaka – thoughts had started to turn towards the trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, there are now significant doubts as to whether or not that match will go ahead.

Here are your latest Arsenal headlines ahead of a potentially huge weekend for the team.

Xhaka was sent off again on Thursday

Arsenal request Tottenham postponement

Arsenal have put forward a request to the Premier League to rearrange the clash with Tottenham on Sunday.

Following Thursday’s encounter against Liverpool, manager Mikel Arteta has a number of fresh injury problems to deal with. In addition, Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey are away at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Xhaka is suspended.

A decision is set to be made about whether the game can go ahead on Saturday.

“The Premier League has received a postponement request from Arsenal FC relating to their away match against Tottenham Hotspur, due to be played at 4.30pm on Sunday 16 January,” said a statement from the Premier League.

“The Premier League Board will meet tomorrow to review the application and inform both clubs and their fans of its decision.”

Carragher encourages Arsenal to sell Xhaka

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has encouraged Arsenal to move on Xhaka.

The Swiss midfielder was sent off in the early stages of the clash at Anfield, making it five red cards since moving to the club.

While Xhaka has turned in occasional strong performances down the years, he has frequently let the team down with rash decisions.

“The thing with Xhaka is we’ve said before the game that every manager picks him, he is a good character, a good trainer, a good lad, he is a good player, we’ve seen that in a Switzerland shirt and at times in an Arsenal shirt as well,” said Carragher.

“But he is a liability in terms of that tonight.”

Saka injury latest

Arteta has said he is not sure Bukayo Saka will be available for the clash against Spurs, should it go ahead.

The England international hobbled out of the match with Liverpool having put in a stellar defensive shift for the team.

Saka has enjoyed an excellent campaign and as an Arsenal academy graduate he will be desperate to make an impression in arguably the team’s biggest game of the season.

“He felt something in the last minutes, he was really fatigued,” Arteta said after the Liverpool game.

“I don’t know. He’s a young boy and he recovers really quickly. But he’s played a lot of minutes in the last few months so let’s see who is available.”
