Player of the Week: Tennessee’s Johannus Monday logged a near-perfect weekend for Tennessee at the ITA Indoor National Championships in Seattle, claiming three singles victories and a doubles record of 4-0 for seven total victories. The Vols faced four top-13 opponents over the weekend, winning their first three matches in the Emerald City en route to a championship match appearance. Monday, the nation’s 10th-ranked singles player, rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 victory on court two over Texas A&M’s Pierce Rollins Friday, before defeating Toby Samuel of South Carolina, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Monday decisively won 11 of the final 12 games in his match against Samuel, earning a key victory as the Big Orange advanced to the semifinal round of ITA Indoors. Monday’s third singles win came in convincing fashion over TCU’s 15th-ranked Juan Carlos Aguilar, as he collected a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 2 singles slot. Monday has now won 14 of his past 15 completed singles matches, dating back to the fall season. As for doubles, Monday paired up with Tennessee graduate student Mark Wallner to earn four wins on the doubles courts in as many days. The first victory of the weekend came over Texas A&M’s Perot/Perego, 6-4, followed by a 6-3 win over Story/Lambling of South Carolina the following day. With the tournament field narrowed down to four teams, Monday picked up a crucial 7-5 victory on court three of doubles over the Baylor pairing of Boitan/Paroulek to help earn Tennessee the doubles point in the eventual 4-2 Vols win. A 6-3 win over TCU’s Aguilar/Ruehl on Sunday marked the seventh overall win for Monday in Seattle, as he improved to 5-0 when paired with Wallner in doubles this season.
Freshman of the Week: Florida’s Nate Bonetto was a key part in giving the Gators a top-10 victory over No. 9 Georgia at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Playing singles at court six, Bonetto was able to knock off UGA’s Miguel Perez Pena in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to give Florida a 2-0 advantage in the match. Bonetto is an undefeated 3-0 in dual match singles and currently ranks second on the team with 16 singles wins on the year.
