as the cost of living soars it’s crunch time for the treasurer

Josh Frydenberg has warned Australians to not be naive about how the Ukraine disaster will have an effect on costs. But will they perceive and forgive?

Two months out from an election, the Morrison authorities faces a critical cost-of-living disaster, with petrol costs spiralling and customary family items changing into dearer. Fuel is now at $2.20 a litre and tipped to rise to $2.50.

The federal price range is due two weeks from tomorrow and can give Treasurer Josh Frydenberg an opportunity to reset and discover methods to a minimum of symbolically attempt to alleviate cost-of-living pressures. 

But with warfare in Ukraine pushing up international commodity costs, and the continuing impacts of the pandemic, economists say the federal government has few levers left to ease the blow of a disaster largely past its management.
